“My brother Nijazim was kidnapped from the train in Strpci 17 years ago, and then murdered. His only crime was his name. The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) did a lot to enable the kidnappings and crimes in Sandzak to occur. There is evidence that the Republika Srpska Army gave weapons and tools and the FRY gave logistic support for the crimes in Strpci and Mioce. The new governments and states did nothing about the crimes in Sandzak during all these years. Only the Prijepolje Municipality erected a memorial for the victims of the crime in Strpci, but only for the nine people from Prijepolje. They did not have the strength to do it for all 19 kidnapped and murdered people”, said Nail Kajevic from Prijepolje, the representative of families of the victims in Strpci at the beginning of the discussion “War crimes in Serbia — the Sandzak case” on 3 March at the Belgrade Media Center. »»

In February, during the failed election of the Commissioner for the protection of equality of citizens, the Parliament showed arbitrariness in their actions, and interpreted the Law on the fight against discrimination according to their own needs. "There are no systematic human rights violations in Montenegro. However, there are some problematic aspects to it - freedom of expression, discrimination, status of Roma and displaced persons, domestic violence, torture etc. The rising trend of ethnic distance, upheld by public opinion polls, is an issue of concern. Another point of concern is the fact that the key link in the state system of human rights protection, the authorized minister Ferhat Dinosha, publicly voiced extremely negative views pertaining to rights of LGBT population, interethnic marriages, as well as neglected the Roma language while listing minority languages", is stated in editorial to the Youth Initiative for Human Rights' (YIHR) annual report on the status of human rights in Montenegro, presented on December 21, 2009, at the press conference held at this organization's Office in Podgorica. »»

Some of the reasons listed by the participants of the session on the relations and prejudice between Serbia and Kosovo on 5 December at the Belgrade Summit 2009, for insufficient ties between the young from these regions were an inadequate educational system, inadequate information and limited freedom of movement. Besart Lumi, the coordinator of the Visiting Program of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) office in Pristina, pointed out that the communication of the young from these regions has been impeded from 1999 to present day, and was completely blocked during the war in Kosovo in 2001. »»

“Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje is formally one town, within which two towns operate, one Croatian and one Bosnian. There is a highschool, which contains two schools under one roof – on the lower floor are the Croatian, and on the upper floor the Bosnian students. The children learn by different curriculi. It is sad that these young people go to recess together, and can never greet each other and say ’how are you, what’s new’. If they had a mutual school, a mutual educational system, the possibility for a young Bosnian and a young Croat to sit together and find out that their problems and needs are the same, everything would be different... »»

“The fate of the region still depends on the generation of our parents. The results are evident and it is time to take things into our own hands. There are four hundred of us here, and what we have in common is that we care about our future and do not accept the heritage of the past which no one talks about to be the cause of new problems and divisions. From this place we will send a message to both our politicians and the European Union. We have no intention of standing on the side and waiting for our destinies to be dependent upon the politics of the past. “I want messages of this gathering to reach Serbian, Croatian and international officials. When it comes to Vukovar, everyone failed – eighteen years after the town’s destruction no one is held accountable. Accountability was only established for the crime committed on Ovčara farm. If those culpable of this destruction were prosecuted, my friends, fellow townspeople of Serbian nationality, would be feeling relieved too, for it would eliminate the burden of collective guilt. "Bullies are not grey zone in this state, but rather a part of it. Gay Pride Parade was prohibited de jure since it was first allowed to take place at one, and then at another location, and that should be clearly pointed out. How did the state justify the ban? It admitted to not being able to cope with bullies. The state has monopoly of force by definition, and if it does not, it is not a state. This means that there exists the fourth branch of power, and not as of recently either - it was incorporated in the 1990s and is made up of an amalgam of bullies, patres familias and tycoons. The problem arises from the fact that the state tacitly recognizes existence of the fourth branch and respects it", said Vesna Rakić-Vodinelić, professor at the Union University's Law School, during a round table debate titled "Civil Society's Response to Violence", held on September 30 at Belgrade's Centre for Cultural Decontamination (CZKD). »»

Between August 1st and October 15th the YIHR monitored nine Kosovar daily newspapers. At a generally level journalism in Kosovo is satisfactory. Basic errors are made, in terms of good practice, when, for instance, a single source of information is used to create a story. Also, there is a serious lack of investigative journalism. Journalism in Kosovo follows so called “protocol journalism?.Reports on the negotiations between Prishtina and Belgrade were not balanced.
